Alexander Richardson and Walter Airis were partners in the Richardson and Airis C.O.D. Boot and Shoe Store.

In 1885, Richardson began manufacturing ladies’ and children’s shoes in the top floor of the Norcross Building at 7-9 (now 17) South River Street. In 1889, the factory had 60-70 employees making 100-125 pairs of shoes daily.
